Making a Herbarium Specimen

A herbarium sheet is a necessary accompaniment to the DNA barcode produced at Tree School ensuring correct identification and scientific accuracy. Each child takes a sample from their chosen tree that they will use to make their herbarium sheet. These samples contain any important features that help to identify the species of tree e.g. flowers, fruits, leaf arrangement etc. The sample is then pressed and dried during the week. The children are shown how to mount their samples on to standard herbarium sheets as used at the Natural History Museum. This serves as a permanent scientific record of the children's work and is kept in The Old Malthouse Herbarium.
